Butterfly Chairs and Interiors That Would Miss It!

Writer's picture: ArchetypenArchetypen

Modern design is unique and iconic in its way. Just like the Hardoy Chair known as the "Butterfly Chair" or the BKF Chair. It is the one mid-century chair design that we have seen each time in residential interiors all around the world. The unique design combines simplicity with quirky style perfectly, as reflected in the unusual yet streamline shape. The style of the chair is iconic of its time and has been consistently popular since its creation.

The butterfly chair is very popular for its casual feel. It features a fixed frame and a large cloth base sling hung from the frame's highest points, which is very popular for use both in portable recreating settings as well as the home. Due to its stylish and industrial update and the fact that it is easy to transport, it is easy to see why this chair has been increasingly popular since its creation.

The History....

Designed in 1938 the chair is named after its three designers - Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan, and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, popularly known as BKF, though Hardoy is said to be the lead designer of the chair.

The chair was initially designed for a project that the Austral Group were working on, but it went on to be included in a design exhibition held in 1940 where it was awarded two prizes. It is also said that Edgar Kaufmann, who was the Curator of Industrial Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, showed great interest in the chair. He purchased two of them and reviewed them as 'lightweight, functional, and handsome.'

The BKF Chair was first mass-produced in the U.S. The chair was made using two bent tubular steel rods welded together. To create the iconic suspended seat, a leather sling was hooked over the top.

Interior Design....

Due to its versatile use and style, the Butterfly Chair can be a warm and welcoming addition to a variety of interiors. Initially, the chair was designed to be used outdoors, but today they work brilliantly in the home, adding an industrial edge to any interiors.

Consider adding the iconic BKF chair to your office, home, or study to create a chill-out zone. Place them in an unused corner and complete with shelving full of your favorite magazines or books. Try the Butterfly Chair in Brown for a relaxing and natural finish.

Try introducing this beautiful Butterfly Chair to your bedroom. Place them in an otherwise unused corner, to create an additional use to space - making it a perfect place to relax, read, or listen to music. Try the Butterfly Chair in Black to add a playful print.

Create a flexible seating area in your living area with the addition of a Butterfly Chair. Place it beside your sofa to provide additional seating area that looks stylish and feels comfortable. We would love the tan leather Butterfly Chair that would go perfectly with leather seating or neutral fabrics such as black and grey.

With such a vehemently rich history, it is clear to see why these versatile chairs are so popular in 21st-century interiors. Iconic, unique, and stylish, the Butterfly chair continues to transform both the offices, homes and bars around the world.
