Even if you are not a design fanatic and are not sure of its name, chances are you have seen or even sat in the Wishbone Chair. In production for over 60 years, this modern classic designed by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn looks fresh and contemporary. It is handmade with the most exceptional craftsmanship possible.
Celebrated for its clean lines and straightforward style, the piece of modern design history will never go out of style. Wegner’s CH24 Stuhl Chair is durable yet lightweight, with a solid wood frame and a unique seat made by hand weaving more than 120 meters of specialty paper cord.
The light, sculptural Wishbone Chair was precisely what the Hansen Company was looking for to supplement the most substantial forms that were popular at the time.
However, the chair was a challenging one to make; as the steam-bent solid wood frame demands perfect craftsmanship and in-depth knowledge of wood joinery.
Using the best natural materials, the chair offers outstanding sitting comfort and is made to last for generations. Recently, the chair was also introduced in many vibrant colours, including bright blues, soft pastels, and vibrant yellows.

CH24 Wishbone Chair
The chair itself has been in continuous production since the 1950s. Wegner’s approach to creating luxurious soft and organic pieces such as the CH24 Wishbone had ensured that his timeless designs are embraced today as when they were first produced.
The CH24 Stuhl Chairs unique design holds a special position in the world of modern design. What appeals most to me is its organic qualities and the soft, elegant lines of its form. This particular design came into life from Wegner’s original Chinese chair in 1943 and his Round chair. He constantly redefined and redesigned his design into the CH24
Wishbone Chair that we all love today.
The CH24 Wishbone chair was the last of a series that Wegner created for Carl Hansen & Søn, and his inspiration was drawn from portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs.
THE DESIGN
Wegner achieved a huge leap in the furniture design with the CH24 Stuhl Chair. The top rails and arms were combined into a single piece, and the Y-shaped back provides support and comfort whilst adding stability to the steam-bent top. The curved back legs of the chair make it look gracious with the stylish semi-circular top rail that add to the elegance of the chair.
The paper cord for the chair was chosen for its incredible quality and natural qualities, which enhances the wood frame it is woven around. One chair takes skilled craftsmanship of about 10 hours to weave the paper cord, with 120 meters of paper cord needed for each chair.
The chair is surprisingly light and a relatively small piece of furniture that allows the occupants the ultimate support with its Y-back. The curved top rail makes maneuverability easy for changing seating positions and the armrests are short enough to enable the chair to be easily pushed closer to a table. Great if space is at a premium.
The availability of the chair in a variety of wood and finish options let it fit into a multitude of styles, spaces, and colour schemes.
I hope you have enjoyed this Danish design as much as I have had writing it. I am deeply in love with this elegantly, simplistic design. The CH24 Wishbone Chair is Danish Form and Function at its extreme best!
